Kallie Kahl Receives Work Award from Blackburn College

2013 May 3

Kallie Kahl of Bunker Hill, IL received the Bierd Work Prize on April 22, 2013, for their hard work and effort in the Blackburn College Work Program. The annual Honors Banquet included an awards ceremony, dinner catered by Sodexo, and entertainment by the Blackburn Voices, the college's vocal ensemble.

Students are selected for work awards by supervisors, student work managers, and peers based on their attitude toward work and character demonstrated in the work program. Blackburn's one-of-a-kind student managed Work Program requires residential students to work 10 hours a week which pays a portion of their tuition. Students gain work experience by working jobs like food services, grounds, electric work, campus security, office work, athletics, and even working with the President of the College.

Founded in 1837, Blackburn College is a four-year, Presbyterian-related, co-educational liberal arts college located in Carlinville, Illinois. One of the seven work colleges in the U.S., Blackburn is the only one with a student managed Work Program. Blackburn was ranked by US News as the 2012 #2 Best Value College in the Midwest; and placed #65 in The Washington Monthly's ranking of Baccalaureate Colleges. The school remains the most affordable, residential private liberal arts college in the state.
